Meet the artist - Janine Kilroe

20th May 2016

Fine Art Photographer, Janine Kilroe, will be in residence at the South Downs Heritage Centre in Hassocks on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June. Learn about Janine’s own hand painted photography techniques and see an exhibition of her work.

Since the very first days of primitive monochrome photography, people have attempted to add colour by hand, to enhance images. Originally, they wanted to make the image as realistic as possible and hand-colouring was the easiest way to achieve this. However, in the mid-20th century in the USA, Kodak introduced Kodachrome colour film, enabling the world to enjoy full-colour photographic images for the first time.

In the wake of this momentous breakthrough, hand-colouring was a neglected and largely obsolete skill for many years, until a few enlightened people such as Janine Kilroe discovered that colouring monochrome pictures by hand enabled them to add a creative, personal, artistic dimension to the image that no mechanical process could achieve.

Janine's hand-coloured pictures have a luminous, ethereal quality that could not be replicated any other way. They have to be seen to be appreciated, as no reproduction does them justice. Her signature artwork is to print black and white fine art photographs onto watercolour paper and then selectively reintroduce colour back into the image by hand painting using watercolour pencils and washes.

You will find Janine in The Mezzanine Gallery at the South Downs Heritage Centre, South Downs Nurseries, Hassocks, on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June between 10-4pm. For further information, visit www.janinekilroe.com
